The Roadmap
Information Services Strategic Priorities, 2009-10
Technology is a major partner in the role of education, research and the life of our University. Students, faculty and staff expect technology- via a wide variety of services - to deliver content when and where it is needed. The following strategic priorities aim to guide, support and provide oversight to technology solutions that our Academy currently has integrated into campus life, as well as provide a roadmap for new services that are needed
Support a 21st Century Learning Environment
Information technology in higher education is a stated expectation on the part of students and faculty. It is an integral tool in recruiting new students. It is also a tool that enriches the individual learning experience and can aid in the retention of both students and faculty. Examples of such technology can be found in classrooms and those services that extend our Academy beyond the physical campus and into the world.
- Increase general purpose classrooms supported by IS
- Develop alternate funding solutions for support of general purpose classrooms
- Conduct ongoing review of emerging technologies
- Develop 'one stop shop' for faculty to request instructional resources and services
Provide a Secure Environment for University Information
Digital information is a vital asset for our University; it is created as part of our research and instruction mission as well as consumed by our students, employees and the public we serve. It is vital that these assets are provided appropriate protection and are shared in ways that protect individuals'identities as well as the integrity of the content. One key facet of this secure environment is the ability to provide access to computer-based services based on roles individuals have within our Academy.
- Identify campus information security officer and security team
- Develop policy and procedures for network and computer security as well as data access
- Educate University personnel regarding their responsibilities for information security
- Increase the number of campus services utilizing Identity Management for access
Optimize the Delivery of Campus-Wide Technology Solutions
In partnership with the University community, Information Services will continue to seek out rationales to match the correct technology solutions to meet campus-wide academic and business needs, including outsourcing, internally developed services and commercial products.
- Develop a catalog of IT services
- Develop a process for review of existing services
- Identify Service Managers for IT services
Ensure Academic and Business Continuity and Mitigate Risk
Information Services provides stewardship of technology systems and applications that are necessary to the day-to-day operations of our University. Information Services will continue to collaborate with the campus to review services and technologies to keep the Academy operating at a level that meets our obligations to citizenry and the State of Nebraska
- Review and test existing disaster recovery plans
- Develop additional disaster recovery plans for remaining critical IT services
- Test disaster recovery plans on a regular basis
Enhance Network Capabilities to Support Future Academic and Research Needs
Our University relies on a robust network infrastructure in order to pursue and be successful in its academic and research mission. Information Services recently engaged with WTC Consulting in developing a five year plan to enhance our network environment.
- Adopt a multi-year network enhancement implementation plan for the campus
- Accomplish 1st year network enhancements
