Information Services Improves Network Performance, Flattens Rates

Information Services has announced a new flat-rate fee for all wired network connections. All users will be able to connect to the network at the maximum data speed provided to their building for $4.25 per month. Wireless connectivity will remain at $6.00 per month. The new rate structure, effective July 1, 2007, eliminates tiered pricing and is expected to return approximately $105,000 per year to campus departments.

The rate change comes as Information Services is steadily upgrading network connectivity to campus buildings from 10 megabits per second (mb) upwards to 100Mb and 1,000Mb. Users should experience improved performance in the coming months as upgraded electronics will allow computers, printers, servers and other devices to transmit and receive data at the fastest speeds available.

IS has also aggressively negotiated reduced pricing from commodity internet providers."The new rate structure will simplify the process for campus users, and encourage faculty and staff to take advantage of the full capabilities of UNL's digital network" explains Michael Ruhrdanz, Director of Communications & Operations, Information Services.
